TOP-QUALITY SUSTAINABLY DESIGNED PRODUCTS

Our market-leading ecoecho® range provides eco-conscious solutions for virtually every need. To be certified ecoecho® a Duni product should live up to at least two of our four environmental criteria: renewable, compostable, responsibly sourced or resource efficient.

These criteria must apply to a significant part of the product. Living up to one may be enough if – compared to the standard alternative(s) – the relevant material clearly drives change towards more sustainable practices. Furthermore, most ecoecho® products are recyclable.

Our position on Plastic

For several years, we have focused on developing a wide range of plastic-free designs that now form part of our ecoecho® range. We welcome the EU Commission’s directive to combat the environmental impact on single-use plastic products. We share the concern of plastics in the sea and are committed to taking the lead on closing the loop for our industry.

THE ULTIMATE LINEN LOOK AND FEEL

New softer, richer Dunilin® gives you the exclusive look and feel of linen – but unlike linen – flawless colours, hygiene and folds. That way, you never need to check for imperfections.

Even better, you can put the napkins out for composting where allowed, avoiding laundry hassles. And you get a palette of designs, unicolours and new formats that make it easy to re-fresh your look, whenever it suits.

UPCYCLED MATERIAL.
UPLIFTING DESIGN.

Octabagasse take-away boxes bring the classic Octaview design language to life with top-quality eco-conscious materials.
Suitable for warm and cold foods, they offer bases made from compostable bagasse and 100% recycled PET (rPET) lids. From Q2 2019 bagasse lids will be available too. Ideal, if you want a plastic-free solution.

compost at home

You can compost the napkins that carry the OK compost HOME label on the compost heap in your garden. This is because they compost at lower temperatures than used for industrial composting. In doing so, they begin the journey from end-of-life into a new resource!

PIONEERING ECO-MATERIAL

THE GRASS IS GREENER

The grass paper we use for Leaf placemats and Sachetto® napkin pockets offers significant environmental advantages. It consists of 40% grass fibre and 60% FSC-certified wood fibre.

Grass paper is recyclable, compostable and extremely resource-efficient, requiring little water and energy for production. Furthermore, it is made using locally harvested grass.

THE ECOECHO® CRITERA

To qualify as ecoecho®, a Duni product should live up to at least two of our four environmental criteria. Living up to one may be enough if – compared to the standard alternative(s) – the relevant material clearly drives change towards more sustainable practices.

COMPOSTABLE

Product is made using materials that biodegrade in industrial composting facilities under the standard EN 13432 or ASTM D6400. Certifications are available in OK Compost Industrial for industrial composting and OK Compost Home for composting in a home [composting] environment.

Examples of compostable materials we offer: Tissue, Dunilin®, bagasse, PLA/CPLA.

RESOURCE EFFICIENT

Product is made using raw materials that show clear resource efficiency compared to standard alternatives. For instance, recycled materials, low processed filler materials like Chalk, and by-products that otherwise would have been considered waste.

Examples of resource efficient materials we offer: Bagasse and rPET

RENEWABLE

Product is made using renewable raw materials from the biosphere: wood or plant material. Renewable materials are part of the biomass CO2 cycle and do not contribute to global warming, as opposed to carbon-based materials such as mineral oil. Examples of renewable materials we offer: Bagasse, stearin, Birch wood, PLA and CPLA.

RESPONSIBLY SOURCED

Product is made using raw-materials that are part of a certification scheme, which assures responsible social and environmental practice in forestry or plantation.

Example of a responsibly sourced material we offer: the FSC®-certified forest fibres we use for napkins, table covers, plates and cups.

OF THE DYES WE USE FOR NAPKINS AND TABLE COVERS ARE WATER-BASED AND DON’T CONTAIN SOLVENTS.

Materials

Bagasse

Compostable bagasse is a great example of upcycling. It is made with surplus natural material from sugar production: sugar cane stems.

  • Readily biodegrades under controlled composting conditions
  • Once composted it turns to soil in just a few weeks
  • Suitable for industrial composting
  • May be sorted with food waste depending on local regulations
  • Available certification: EN13432

After use: you can sort with waste for industrial composting or cardboard for recycling.

Local waste regulations need to be followed. Check with local waste handlers.

Cardboard

To qualify as ecoecho®, cardboard products must be either FSC®-certified or have a compostable lining. Some meet both these criteria.

  • Available certification for PLA or PBS-lined products: EN13432

After use: you can recycle as cardboard.

Local waste regulations need to be followed. Check with local waste handlers.

rPet

rPET is made from recycled plastic bottles – which otherwise would end up in landfill sites or burnt as fuel.

  • Typically, rPET has a 50% lower carbon footprint than virgin plastic
  • ecoecho® rPET products contain up to 100% recycled PET
  • The rPET we use is regularly tested to ensure it meets food safety rules – and for content of metals and hazardous materials
  • Supply chain is fully documented.

After use: you can recycle it as a standard plastic.

Local waste regulations need to be followed. Check with local waste handlers.

PLA/CPLA

Compostable PLA and CPLA are made from otherwise surplus renewable material: fermentable corn starch.

  • Bioplastics like PLA and CPLA offer society a way to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
  • CPLA is chemically identical to PLA. The difference is that it is crystalized, which makes it stronger and able to withstand higher temperatures.
  • Reflecting this, CPLA can withstand temperatures up to +70oC and PLA up to +50oC
  • Suitable for industrial composting.

After use: you can sort with food waste for industrial composting, depending on local regulations, or recycle as bioplastic.

Local waste regulations need to be followed. Check with local waste handlers.

birch

Birch wood comes from birch trees. It is a 100% natural resource. Benefits of our birch wood products:

  • Plastic-free
  • No lamination, dye or wax
  • Suitable for hot and cold food
  • Strong and durable

Local waste regulations need to be followed. Check with local waste handlers.

DUNILIN®

Relaunched in 2019, new Dunilin® is softer, richer and suitable for industrial composting. It offers the ultimate linen look and feel.

  • Compostable
  • Made from FSC-certified fibres
  • One napkin lasts whole meal

After use: you can sort with waste for industrial composting where available.

Local waste regulations need to be followed. Check with local waste handlers.

dunisoft®

All Dunisoft® unicoloured napkins, and some design napkins, meet the stringent ecoecho® criteria. In practice, this means they are responsibly sourced, as well as FSC® and OK compost-certified.

  • Compostable
  • Made from FSC-certified fibres
  • One napkin lasts multiple courses

After use: you can sort with waste for industrial composting when OK Compost certified.

Local waste regulations need to be followed. Check with local waste handlers.

TISSUE

All ecoecho® tissue napkins are compostable. Our Consumer selection is certified OK Compost HOME; our Table Top selection is certified OK Compost as suitable for industrial composting (see ‘after use’ below for more).

  • Made from FSC®-certified fibres
  • Carry the OK compost HOME– and Nordic Swan Ecolabel

After use: You can sort with waste for industrial composting if your napkins carry the OK Compost label. If they are OK Compost HOME certified you can put them on your compost heap at home.

Local waste regulations need to be followed. Check with local waste handlers.

grass paper

Made from 40% grass fibres and 60% FSC-certified wood fibres. Grass paper can be used for any paper product.

  • Recyclable, compostable, approved for skin tolerance
  • Energy efficient to produce: it only requires 2 litres of water to produce one ton of grass fibre raw material
  • Grass is available globally, harvested locally and does not compete with resources used for animal feed
  • Production of grass paper does not require chemical treatment.

After use: you can sort with paper for recycling.

Local waste regulations need to be followed. Check with local waste handlers.

recycled glass

The recycled glass we use was originally intended for glass bottles.

  • Reduces emissions and consumption of raw materials
  • Extends the life of plant equipment, such as furnaces, and saves energy
  • Very long life

After use: check with local waste handlers to see if you can sort with other glass bottles and jars.

Local waste regulations need to be followed. Check with local waste handlers.

STEARIN

The Swan Nordic Ecolabel on our stearin candles verifies they are made from fully traceable material, which is at least 90% renewable. Most of our stearin candles also carry the RAL Quality Mark.

  • Minimise soot emissions
  • High quality, impurity free wicks
  • Safe and reliable
  • Tested internally and externally (DEKRA)

Local waste regulations need to be followed. Check with local waste handlers.

bioplastic

The ecoecho® bioplastic is made from sugar cane: 94% of the carbon in the material is from plant-based resources.

  • Highly efficient manufacturing process integrated with the production of sugar
  • LCA (life-cycle assessment) shows bioplastic has a 25% lower carbon footprint than standard plastics.

After use: recycle as plastic.

Local waste regulations need to be followed. Check with local waste handlers.

bamboo

Tactile, lustrous bamboo has a minimal environmental impact. It also offers outstanding functional properties.

  • Naturally anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and odour-resistant
  • Higher compressive strength than concrete, stronger tensile strength than steel
  • Compostable, grown with little or no pesticides
  • Absorbs 5x amount of CO2 and produces 35% more oxygen than other plants in the same space.

Local waste regulations need to be followed. Check with local waste handlers.

blue mission

The platform for our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, our Blue Mission sets out our policy regarding the entire lifecycle of products. In doing so, it highlights that we consider waste management, together with a strong focus on developing and utilising sustainable materials, as key to our success.

TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE SUPPLY CHAIN

We work closely with our suppliers to ensure they meet the highest standards. As part of this process, we audit them regularly to ensure they uphold sustainable values, follow our stringent Supplier Code of Conduct and comply with all the relevant EU regulations.

food safe

We rigorously test ecoecho® materials, and all the others we offer, to ensure food is not contaminated when it comes into contact with our products. After successful testing, we issue a document called ‘Declaration of Compliance,’ stating what conditions the product has been tested for.

DUNI CERTIFICATIONS

If you want to uphold sustainable values, you need to be confident that your products come from a partner who shares them. We do:

  • Duni sites are certified to the ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 management systems for environment and quality
  • Duni is also certified to the BRC Global Standard for Hygiene
  • Duni is certified for environmental labels such as FSC®, Nordic Ecolabel and OK Compost. See more on this below.

Environmental labels

At Duni, as part of our Blue Mission, we work hard to minimise the environmental impact of our business. It’s important to us that our products are made and used with respect for nature. Where possible, we aim to carry third-party labels.

The OK Compost label, from the certification body TUV Austria, indicates that the product is suitable for industrial composting and meets the stringent requirements of the European standard EN 13432.

Products carrying this label from the certification body TUV Austria can be composted at home. For instance, they can be put on the compost heap in a garden. This is because they compost at lower temperatures than used for industrial composting.

Duni is an FSC®-certified company, meaning the great majority of our tissue-based products come from wood fibres sourced from responsibly managed FSC®-certified forests.

The Swan Nordic Ecolabel os one of the most well-known Ecolables in the world. It guarantees products have fulfilled stringent environmental and climate criteria.
